“Case of the Stalking Shadow” is one of the early Dana Roberts stories, written before my daughter, Kasey, and I blended characters so that her character Jana and my character Dana became a team. As Kasey has said, had we known we were going to do that, we would have named them differently, as their names sound too much alike. But, there you have it.

Kasey and I have written about the characters and the series before, and I have written about this story. This is Dana Roberts’s early discovery that what we think of as magic is actually interdimensional, science fictional. It sets the course for her career as a Supernormal Investigator, as she calls herself, not a Supernatural Detective.

Dana believes that what we call supernatural is the science of other dimensions that slips into ours and, along with them, some pretty nasty culprits that just happen to be cousins to Lovecraft’s Old Ones.

The Dana stories before Kasey were a bit stiff, on purpose. They are modeled on the classic told-in-a-bar-or-at-a-club stories of old, although those detectives are nearly always male. I think Kasey joining me let me let loose my normal humor in the stories, and certainly Kasey added more humor to the series and gave the later stories their shape. Enough that I feel after she came to write with me that her influence is dominant. We both write about the same amount, but the tonality for the later stories is hers.
